If you know me, then you know I would typically have nothing to do with NASCAR. Last night, the lens I view this motor 'sport' through changed forever. I joined a friend who gave the opening prayer last night at the Phoenix International Raceway. It was actually a pretty cool opportunity. The best part was when he closed the prayer with "Thank you Lord for the greatest sport on earth!"
We had suite tickets which included a fully catered meal, gift bags and friendly service people. (I felt like I was at the Oscars....minus the celebrities and minus the Oscar trophies...okay so it was nothing like the Oscars.) We had pit passes so we were able to mingle with all of the racers and see the action up close.
I even got to take pictures with the winner at Victory Lane(who was probably 19 - he couldn't even open the champagne because he was underage.) *side-note: the above picture was not the winner, it's just to give you a mental picture of what victory lane is like.
Here are some memorable insights I took from this special night:
- Race cars have fake headlights.
- Not everyone at these events consume large quantities of alcohol. (Most of them, but not all)
- You do not need to have a mullet in order to gain entry to the track. (It helps, but it's not necessary)
- A 'midgets race' is not what you think it is. (Honestly, I was disappointed)
- NASCAR fans have to be the most loyal fans on the face of the planet - this is where you can find your favorite NASCAR fan, a week before the race even starts.
One word describes NASCAR fans: DEVOTION
Last night I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to be completely devoted to a 'sport' I care absolutely nothing about.
